Background of the Study
Blockchain technology has gained significant attention in various industries, including healthcare, due to its potential to enhance security, transparency, and efficiency in data management (Adeola et al., 2023). In healthcare, patient records are critical for ensuring accurate diagnosis, treatment planning, and continuity of care. However, traditional healthcare record management systems are often plagued by issues such as data breaches, errors, and difficulties in sharing information across different institutions. Blockchain’s decentralized and immutable nature offers a promising solution to these challenges (Garba & Bello, 2024).
In Kaduna State, hospitals are striving to modernize their healthcare systems, and the integration of blockchain technology into healthcare record management has become a topic of increasing interest. However, the adoption of this technology remains limited, and there is a need for empirical studies to understand its effectiveness and barriers to implementation in the region (Ahmed et al., 2023).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the growing recognition of blockchain technology’s potential in healthcare, there is limited adoption of blockchain-based healthcare record systems in hospitals in Kaduna State. This is due to various factors such as lack of awareness, high implementation costs, and regulatory concerns. As a result, hospitals continue to face challenges in securing patient data, ensuring interoperability, and improving overall record management efficiency (Musa & Bello, 2023).
This study examines the adoption of blockchain technology in healthcare record management within hospitals in Kaduna State, with a focus on the opportunities, challenges, and potential impact on patient care.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the level of adoption of blockchain technology in healthcare record management in hospitals in Kaduna State.
2. To evaluate the benefits and challenges of adopting blockchain in healthcare record management.
3. To recommend strategies for facilitating the adoption of blockchain technology in healthcare record management.
Research Questions
1. What is the level of adoption of blockchain technology in healthcare record management in hospitals in Kaduna State?
2. What are the benefits and challenges associated with the adoption of blockchain in healthcare record management?
3. What strategies can improve the adoption of blockchain technology in healthcare record management?
Research Hypotheses
1. There is no significant level of adoption of blockchain technology in healthcare record management in hospitals in Kaduna State.
2. Blockchain technology significantly improves healthcare record management in hospitals.
3. Adoption barriers significantly affect the implementation of blockchain technology in hospitals.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on hospitals in Kaduna State and examines the adoption of blockchain technology in healthcare record management. Limitations include the potential lack of awareness about blockchain technology among hospital administrators and staff and the difficulty of quantifying intangible benefits such as improved data security.
Definitions of Terms
